We'll take a look at all the options available that are pretty simple to install and will add some excellent accident prevention and give you that all important peace of mind.  HealthyChildren.Org has a lot of good information about treating and preventing burns

Wall Mount or Free Standing?

The absolute best way to avoid injury is to prevent your baby or child from getting anywhere near the fire whether its natural wood, electric or gas.  There will be hot surfaces and a variety of hazards present and it takes only a second for your baby to get too close or touch a hot surface to suffer a serious burn.

In order to ensure that the hearth gate doesn't fall over and allow access to the fireplace or cause injury it should always be fastened or mounted to the adjacent wall.  Since gates are designed to fit around different sized fireplaces and hearths you will be limited by the size of the gate but there are different sizes to choose from including extra wide safety gates.

A few other important things to keep in mind when installing the gate:

  1. Allow more than an arms length between hot surfaces and gate
  2. Test the temperature of the gate when fire is on to ensure it doesn't get hot enough to cause burns
  3. Make sure there is enough space to add wood, access controls, etc
  4. A self closing or auto closing gate will ensure gate always stays closed

Fireplace Safety Gate Options

A layered approach is a great way to ensure safety in your home.  If your baby or child is creative or adventurous it can be very difficult to prevent every accident.  If you have more than one safety device in place you can get some valuable peace of mind.

Extra Wide Safety Gate

An extra wide or super wide safety gate is a great option for enclosing fireplaces or other hazardous areas of the home like a home gym or exercise equipment.

This style of fireplace safety gate provides a convenient walk-through gate section and several panels that can be configured to suit the unique layout of your home.  They can be folded down when not in use for added convenience.

Superyard Fireplace Gate

A superyard or play yard are another option if you are looking for a large sectional gate to section off an area of your home.

An excellent fireplace screening device with a built in child proof locking system will allow parents access while keeping your baby or child out of the hazardous area.  The hinged panels allow for complete customization of the gate.

Fireplace Door Lock

A fireplace door lock is a handy device that can be used in addition to a fireplace safety gate for added safety.  Most babies are curious and can easily be attracted to the allure of a warm burning fire and you can't blame them!

A lot of injuries are caused by fingers getting pinched in doors whether it's on a fireplace, door or cupboard.  A fireplace door lock installs easily over most handles and prevents baby's from opening the doors.

Hearth Pad

An excellent option for added safety around your fireplace is a hearth pad cushion.  Padding on your fireplace mantle not only provides a comfortable place to sit but will help prevent bumps and bruises from sharp hard edges around the hearth.

The sizes are limited but with some minor alterations you can find something that fits your unique dimensions.  Another option is a corner cushion

Carbon Monoxide Detector

A fireplace unfortunately presents another hazard to both children and parents in addition to burns.  Any fireplace that uses burning fuel whether its wood, gas or coal they give off deadly carbon monoxide.  A fire that is not properly vented or if the vent is accidentally left closed can very quickly become deadly.

Since carbon monoxide is invisible and odourless it is often called the silent killer.  Any time you are operating your fireplace you should ensure the following:

  1. The fireplace vent is open and in good operating condition
  2. If no vent is present make sure to keep a window or door open
  3. A working carbon monoxide detector is installed near the fireplace

A home carbon monoxide detector is required by law in some states and should be installed on each level of your home.  A portable device can be located near a fireplace for added safety and security.

If you decide to use any of these products you can be sure that your fireplace safety gate and additional products will help prevent injuries for your children for many years.  It's important to remember that there is no substitute for adult supervision and accidents can happen in the blink of an eye.
